Equity Funds

Equity funds are equity-oriented for tax purposes: short-term gains (held ≤ 12 months) are taxed at a flat 20%; long-term gains (held > 12 months) at 12.5% on amounts above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year, with no indexation.

Debt Funds

For units acquired on or after 1 April 2023, debt fund gains are taxed at your income-tax slab rate regardless of holding period, the earlier long-term/indexation treatment was removed by the Finance Act 2023.

Hybrid Funds

Tax treatment depends on the fund's actual equity allocation: hybrid schemes with ≥65% in equity are taxed under equity rules, others under debt rules, check the specific fund's Fees & Tax tab.

ELSS (Tax Saver) Funds

ELSS funds are equity-oriented for tax purposes (see Equity), the 80C deduction is separate from, and in addition to, that capital-gains treatment on eventual redemption.

Index / ETF Funds

Most index funds are equity-oriented for tax purposes (see Equity), though some track debt or gold indices and follow debt-fund tax rules instead, check the specific fund.
