Nifty 50 closed at 24187.70, seeing a minor decline. FIIs turned net buyers, injecting ₹1650.16 crore, breaking a four-session selling streak. This shift in institutional flow may influence the 9:15 AM open.

Indian equity markets experienced a mixed session on Tuesday, July 21, with the Nifty 50 closing marginally lower. A significant development was the return of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) as net buyers, injecting +₹1650.16 crore into the market. This marks a reversal after four consecutive sessions of net selling by FIIs, which totaled over ₹7,000 crore in the preceding days. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, were net sellers, offloading −₹656.88 crore.

Index Close Change %
Nifty 50 24187.70 −0.21%
Nifty Bank 57835.35 −0.19%
NIFTY Midcap 100 62987.60 +0.30%

FII and DII Flows

The institutional flow data for July 21 shows FIIs turning net buyers with an inflow of +₹1650.16 crore. This follows a period of sustained selling, with FIIs registering net outflows for four consecutive sessions prior to yesterday. In contrast, DIIs recorded net selling of −₹656.88 crore on July 21, following several sessions of net buying. Over the last five sessions, FIIs have been net sellers overall, while DIIs have largely supported the market with net buying.

Market Movers

Among the Nifty 50, market breadth was nearly balanced with 26 advances and 24 declines. Top gainers included Shriram Finance Ltd. (+2.52%), Bajaj Finserv Ltd. (+2.10%), and Eicher Motors Ltd. (+1.67%). Other notable advancers were Ultratech Cement Ltd. (+1.60%) and HCL Technologies Ltd. (+1.49%).

Conversely, banking and IT stocks saw significant pressure. HDFC Bank Ltd. led the declines, falling −2.08%, followed by State Bank Of India (−1.47%). Reliance Industries Ltd. also closed lower by −1.47%. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. (−1.40%) and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (−1.33%) rounded out the top losers.

The Nifty Bank index closed lower by −0.19%, reflecting the pressure on key banking stocks. Meanwhile, the NIFTY Midcap 100 showed resilience, gaining +0.30%, indicating broader market strength outside the large-cap banking segment.

What to Watch at 9:15

The Nifty 50 closed at 24187.70, experiencing a minor dip. The key factor for Wednesday’s open will be the sustainability of FII buying interest, which marked a significant shift in recent trends. While the Nifty Bank and Nifty 50 saw declines, the positive performance of the NIFTY Midcap 100 suggests underlying strength in broader markets. Traders should monitor early institutional flows and the performance of heavyweight banking and IT stocks, which were under pressure in the previous session.

The market’s direction at the 9:15 AM open will likely be influenced by the continuation of FII inflows and the performance of key index constituents.
