Understanding FII / DII data
What are FIIs and DIIs?
FIIs (Foreign Institutional Investors, now registered as Foreign Portfolio Investors) are overseas funds, banks and insurers investing in Indian markets. DIIs (Domestic Institutional Investors) are Indian institutions such as mutual funds, insurance companies, banks and pension funds.
What does FII / DII net value mean?
Net value is gross purchases minus gross sales for the session, in ₹ crore. A positive figure means the group bought more than it sold (net buyers); a negative figure means it sold more than it bought (net sellers).
When is FII / DII data updated?
NSE publishes provisional cash-market FII and DII figures after market hours on every trading day, usually in the evening. This page updates as soon as the figures are available.
Why does FII / DII activity matter?
Institutions account for a large share of traded value, so sustained buying or selling by either group often moves the broader market. FII flows are also sensitive to global factors such as the dollar, US bond yields and risk appetite, while DII flows are supported by steady domestic SIP inflows.
Does this include F&O (derivatives) activity?
No. These figures cover the cash (equity delivery and intraday) segment only. Participant-wise derivatives positions are published separately by NSE.
