The Indian equity market concluded Thursday’s session with the Nifty 50 posting modest gains, while broader markets experienced some pressure. The benchmark Nifty 50 closed at 24314.75, up +64.55 points, or +0.27%. Market breadth leaned positive, with 31 Nifty stocks advancing against 19 declines, indicating that 62% of the index constituents ended in the green.

However, the Nifty Bank index recorded a slight dip, closing at 57135.90, down −70.00 points (−0.12%). The NIFTY Midcap 100 also faced headwinds, shedding −245.50 points, or −0.39%, to settle at 62616.75.

Auto Sector Drives Nifty Gains

The automobile sector emerged as a significant contributor to the Nifty’s positive close, with several key players featuring among the top gainers. Hero MotoCorp Ltd. led the pack, advancing +3.44% to close at ₹5326.2. The company’s stock received a boost from its strategic entry into the German market through a distribution partnership with KSR Group, making Germany its fifth European market and 53rd globally.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) also performed strongly, rising +2.09% to ₹3289. This came after M&M announced a price hike across its SUV and CV range and reported a 12% rise in June tractor sales for its Farm Equipment Business, with exports increasing 8.32%. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. surged +1.80% to ₹14199, buoyed by the commencement of commercial production at its fourth Hansalpur facility plant, bringing its total manufacturing capacity to 2.9 million units annually, and the launch of its New Brezza Turbo Boosterjet.

Other notable auto sector gainers included Eicher Motors Ltd., up +1.73%, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (TMPV), which gained +1.30%. Beyond autos, Coal India Ltd. climbed +1.71%, while IT majors Wipro Ltd. and Tech Mahindra Ltd. saw gains of +1.47% and +1.46% respectively. Reliance Industries Ltd. and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) also contributed positively, rising +1.31% and +1.24%.
