India and the US discuss nuclear energy expansion, aiming for 100 GW by 2047, alongside clean energy cooperation and infrastructure growth in Houston.

Power Minister Manohar Lal met US Energy Secretary Chris Wright on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial in Houston to discuss India’s nuclear energy expansion roadmap. The meeting coincides with growing interest from United States industry to invest in the Indian nuclear sector as the country aims for 100 GW atomic energy capability by 2047.

Key Energy Metrics Discussed

During the ministerial discussions, the Indian delegation highlighted key milestones achieved in building a secure and resilient energy system. The discussions covered specific capacity figures and the current composition of the national energy mix.

Total installed capacity and non-fossil shares include the following data points:

552 GW of total installed capacity achieved by India.

More than 50 per cent of the energy mix accounted for by non-fossil sources.

Advances made in solar power, energy storage, nuclear energy, and clean cooking access.

Infrastructure Needs and Regulatory Reforms

The two leaders reviewed power infrastructure requirements driven by emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, high-performance computing, and data centres. Manohar Lal outlined ongoing regulatory reforms designed to streamline approvals and enhance predictability for timely infrastructure development.
