India’s Gen Z is increasingly adopting cryptocurrency as their primary entry point into financial markets, according to new data from crypto exchange WazirX. Nearly 44.4% of Gen Z investors on the platform began their investment journey with digital assets. This demographic accounted for 72% of all new investors on WazirX during the first half of 2026.
The median age of these Gen Z investors is 25, and they represent 32.1% of active traders on the platform. Notably, 80% of WazirX’s Gen Z users originate from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, highlighting a decentralized adoption trend.
These young investors are not solely pursuing speculative assets, demonstrating a diversified approach to their portfolios. Their allocations show a balanced interest across various digital asset categories.
- Allocated to “blue-chip” cryptocurrencies: 25%
- Allocated to memecoins: 16%
- Allocated to utility-focused categories (DeFi, Layer-2, payment tokens): 59%
Gen Z investors also exhibit a distinct strategy during market volatility, opting to buy into corrections rather than withdrawing funds. Their investment behavior suggests a view of downturns as accumulation opportunities.
- Percentage buying during mild market corrections: 52.8%
- Percentage buying on the worst trading days: 43.7%
- Average investment size during major market declines: Nearly unchanged
The financial profile of these young participants indicates a diverse economic background, incorporating crypto into their investment strategies early in their financial lives. A substantial majority report moderate annual incomes.
- Gen Z users with annual incomes between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh: 79.6%
- Students among Gen Z users: 40%
- Salaried professionals among Gen Z users: 33%
- Self-employed among Gen Z users: 27%
Nischal Shetty, founder of WazirX, stated that Gen Z approaches crypto investing with discipline, curiosity, and a long-term mindset. He emphasized this is “laying the groundwork for India’s next financial revolution.” These findings were released around International Youth Day.
The data underscores the expanding role of digital assets within India’s retail-investor landscape, with Gen Z emerging as a pivotal new participant group, especially from non-traditional financial centers. This trend signifies a shift in how young Indians engage with financial markets.
