GAIL (India) has commissioned a 1.25 MTPA Purified Terephthalic Acid manufacturing plant through its subsidiary, GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals. The facility, located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone in Karnataka, began operations following a comprehensive refurbishment and revival process conducted by the company.
The plant was previously owned by JBF Petrochemicals, which GAIL acquired in 2023 through a Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process approved by the National Company Law Tribunal. The company stated that the project involved complex engineering and operational tasks to restore the facility to working order. The site is positioned near the New Mangalore Port to utilize existing logistics infrastructure for the transport of materials.
Purified Terephthalic Acid serves as a primary raw material for producing polyester fibre, yarn, and PET resin used in packaging and textiles. GAIL plans to distribute the output under the brand name G-Tex using its existing marketing network. The company noted that the facility increases domestic production capacity, which it expects will lower import reliance and assist the growth of the local polyester sector.
