The Unified Payments Interface has evolved significantly since its inception, becoming deeply embedded in the daily financial routines of Indians. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, the platform shifted from handling simple bank-to-bank transfers to supporting everyday purchases and Initial Public Offering applications.

A total of 752 banks are currently live on the network.

Expanded Ecosystem and New Features

Beyond basic payments, the ecosystem added multiple features to broaden accessibility and handle complex financial activities. Investors now use their UPI ID to authorize mandate requests that block required funds in bank accounts until share allotments finish during IPO applications.

The platform integrated numerous innovations to enhance convenience alongside the core payment rails:

Features now include UPI Lite for small-value transactions and UPI AutoPay for recurring bills and subscriptions.

Support for feature phones is available via UPI 123PAY, alongside UPI One World, voice-based payments called Hello! UPI, and NFC-enabled Tap and Pay.
