Telangana government to launch a dedicated ride-hailing app for auto drivers, offering fare hikes and EV retrofitting aid post-strike.

The Telangana government has announced its intention to develop a dedicated ride-hailing application specifically for auto drivers, a move that follows the recent conclusion of an indefinite strike by these drivers. This initiative comes after the state government provided assurances addressing various demands from the auto driver community.

State Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar stated that the state’s IT department will undertake the development of this new app. This platform aims to function similarly to existing services such as Uber and Ola, providing a state-backed alternative for ride-hailing services.

Key Government Concessions Outlined

  • An increase in auto fares, marking the first hike since 2012.
  • Financial assistance totaling Rs 1.50 lakh for drivers in Hyderabad to retrofit diesel and petrol autos with electric vehicle mechanisms.
  • Consideration of a new policy to permit only bike taxis with yellow number plates for passenger transport.
  • A positive decision expected on the ruling Congress party’s promise of providing Rs 12,000 annually to auto drivers.

The financial aid for electric vehicle retrofitting specifically targets drivers within Hyderabad, aiming to support the transition towards greener transport options. This measure helps drivers upgrade their vehicles to meet contemporary environmental standards.

Minister Prabhakar further indicated that the proposed annual payment of Rs 12,000 to auto drivers, a pledge made by the Congress party, will be subject to consultations. Discussions will involve Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and other relevant ministers before a final decision is made.
