Indian equities closed higher Thursday as the Sensex gained 274 points, boosted by ₹2,982 crore FII inflows, despite global oil and interest rate concerns.

Indian equity markets concluded Thursday positively, with the Sensex advancing by 273.55 points to 77,928.15. The NSE Nifty also increased by 66.95 points, closing at 24,317.15.

This upward movement was primarily fueled by consistent buying in large-cap stocks and a substantial influx of foreign institutional investment. Strong demand for key blue-chip companies helped indices recover from earlier intraday lows.

  • Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers, injecting approximately ₹2,981.87 crore into the Indian equity market.

Despite these domestic tailwinds, external pressures continued to loom, including escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Global crude oil prices also rose, with Brent crude reaching USD 91.15 per barrel.

Key Market Contributors

  • Major contributors to the Sensex’s gains included Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and the State Bank of India.
  • Conversely, stocks such as Adani Ports, InterGlobe Aviation, Bajaj Finserv, and Bharat Electronics experienced selling pressure.

Sectoral Performance Overview

  • The auto sector demonstrated strong performance, gaining 1.58%.
  • Moderate gains were also observed in the energy, oil & gas, and banking sectors.
  • The realty sector, however, declined by 2.10%.
  • Dips were additionally noted in the services and insurance sectors.

The US Federal Reserve maintained interest rates as anticipated, yet its hawkish stance on inflation continued to keep global investors cautious. Rising US bond yields present a potential challenge for emerging markets.

Nevertheless, domestic factors such as a stable rupee and early first-quarter FY27 earnings momentum provided crucial market support. Investors will closely monitor how these domestic fundamentals interact with global uncertainties, with particular attention to corporate profit margins and the sustainability of FII flows.
