Pune RTO Introduces MH-61 Series as MH-12 Exhausts
By ThePip Desk
Pune RTO launches the new MH-61 vehicle registration series on Sept 1, 2023, as the MH-12 series reaches its limit. Learn about the new format.
The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is set to introduce a new vehicle registration series, MH-61, effective September 1, 2023. This change becomes necessary as the current MH-12 series approaches full exhaustion.
The RTO anticipates that the existing MH-12 series, which has served the city for several years, will be completely utilized by the end of August. The introduction of MH-61 aims to accommodate the continuous increase in new vehicle registrations across Pune.
Understanding the New Registration Format
The upcoming MH-61 series will maintain the standardized format for vehicle identification numbers. This structured system ensures each vehicle receives a distinct identity.
The format includes a two-letter district code, which is MH for Maharashtra. Following this is a two-digit series code, 61, which replaces the previous 12.
Finally, a four-digit unique registration number is assigned sequentially to each vehicle. This systematic approach ensures clarity and avoids duplication.
This transition to MH-61 is a standard administrative procedure undertaken by transport authorities to efficiently manage the increasing number of vehicles on the roads. The RTO has confirmed that all necessary preparations are underway to facilitate a seamless registration process for vehicle owners.
Similar adjustments have been implemented in other Indian cities and districts when their respective registration series reached capacity. This initiative specifically aims to streamline the registration process and prevent potential delays that could arise from the depletion of the older series.
