ORIX Eyes India’s Vehicle Leasing Boom: Fleet to Reach 1.5 Lakh
By Business Desk
Japanese giant ORIX Corporation plans a major fleet expansion in India, targeting 1.5 lakh vehicles to capitalize on the booming vehicle leasing market.
ORIX Corporation, a prominent Japanese mobility solutions and financial services provider, has pinpointed India as a pivotal global growth market for its vehicle leasing and rental operations. The company is setting ambitious targets to significantly expand its fleet within the country, underscoring its strong conviction in India’s economic trajectory.
Hidetake Takahashi, President and Group CEO of ORIX Corporation, revealed plans to grow the company’s Indian fleet from its current 50,000 vehicles to between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh units in the short to medium term. This strategic move positions ORIX to capitalize on what Takahashi describes as India’s ‘taking off’ stage for vehicle leasing, drawing parallels to Japan’s market evolution approximately 30 years ago.
Key Strategic Figures
- Current Indian fleet: 50,000 vehicles.
- Target Indian fleet: 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh vehicles in the short to medium term.
- India’s leasing market stage: ‘Taking off,’ akin to Japan three decades prior.
The company’s optimism is rooted in a confluence of factors expected to fuel the adoption of vehicle leasing. India’s robust economic expansion, coupled with increasing foreign direct investment, creates a fertile ground for corporate and individual mobility needs.
Driving India’s Mobility Shift
- India’s robust economic expansion.
- Increasing foreign direct investment (FDI).
- Influx of multinational corporations.
- Growing number of domestic entrepreneurs.
- Expanding automobile market size.
- Rising share of leasing within the auto market.
- Generational shift among Gen Z towards experiences over ownership.
Vivek Wadhera, Managing Director and CEO of ORIX Corporation India Ltd, further elaborated that the increasing scale of the automobile market and the expanding share of leasing within it are critical accelerators. He noted a significant generational shift among Gen Z, who increasingly prioritize experiences over traditional vehicle ownership, thereby boosting demand for flexible mobility solutions.
ORIX is prepared to offer diverse mobility solutions beyond conventional leasing, including car rentals and car-sharing services, to align with evolving consumer preferences. A larger fleet size is also expected to enhance the company’s buying power with vehicle manufacturers, providing a strategic advantage in the competitive Indian market.
