India’s market for advanced rechargeable battery cells is projected to expand significantly, with demand set to grow at a 39% compound annual rate until 2030. This robust surge is primarily driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the escalating need for large-scale energy storage systems across the nation.

Key Demand Drivers

  • EV battery demand is anticipated to climb by 35% annually.
  • The battery energy storage sector is expected to see a more rapid expansion, with a projected 78% annual growth rate over the same period.

To support this growth and lessen reliance on imported materials, the Indian government introduced the ₹18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. This initiative aims to foster the establishment of 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of domestic cell manufacturing capacity.

Manufacturing Commitments

  • More than 10 manufacturers have already committed to setting up approximately 178 GWh of manufacturing capacity within India.

Globally, the advanced battery cell market is also evolving, with demand forecast to grow at a 20% annual rate through 2030. This global growth is expected to decelerate to about 8% between 2030 and 2035.

As global manufacturing capacity expands, there is a potential risk of supply surpassing demand, which could lead to pricing pressures and reduced profit margins for manufacturers.
