India’s Manufacturing: Self-Reliance Hindered by Imports

NITI Aayog report reveals India’s manufacturing growth, especially in autos & smartphones, is limited by high import dependence, hindering true self-reliance.
A recent report by NITI Aayog, prepared in collaboration with Crisil, indicates that while India has significantly increased domestic manufacturing across several key sectors, genuine self-reliance remains constrained. The report highlights a persistent heavy dependence on imported components, materials, and technology, despite rising production volumes.
This reliance underscores a critical challenge for India’s industrial strategy. The study emphasizes an urgent need for deeper domestic value addition and stronger indigenous capabilities within global value chains to achieve true self-sufficiency.
Sectoral Insights on Domestic Value Addition
The automobile sector stands out with its deeply established ecosystem. It demonstrates significant localization of parts and actively contributes to component exports, showcasing a mature domestic supply chain.
In contrast, the smartphone manufacturing segment, despite its high domestic assembly rates, achieves only 23% domestic value addition. This sector heavily relies on imported parts for its production processes.
Solar manufacturing capacity has seen a substantial increase, yet upstream components essential for production, such as polysilicon and wafers, are almost entirely imported. This creates a vulnerability in the supply chain.
Electric vehicle sales are progressing, but the sector’s dependence on imported lithium-ion batteries and other critical minerals remains a significant concern. This import reliance could hinder long-term independence.
Similarly, the telecom equipment sector has expanded its production of various products. However, domestic value addition often falls below 15%, driven by a substantial reliance on imported semiconductors and other vital modules.
Shifting Manufacturing Strategy
India’s manufacturing strategy is now evolving beyond simply achieving production scale. The focus is shifting towards building more profound domestic component ecosystems and developing critical indigenous technologies to overcome current dependencies.
