India-Argentina Boost Lithium & Trade Ties
By Business Desk
India and Argentina deepen strategic partnership, focusing on lithium mining expansion in Catamarca, Salta, and Jujuy, alongside boosting agricultural and pharmaceutical trade.
India and Argentina are significantly advancing their strategic partnership, with a primary focus on expanding lithium mining operations and broadening bilateral trade. This intensified collaboration follows the successful completion of Phase II lithium drilling by India’s state-owned Khanij Bidesh India (**KABIL**) in Argentina’s Catamarca province.
Building on this success, both nations are now exploring opportunities to extend mining activities into additional prospective regions. Discussions are specifically underway regarding expansion into the provinces of **Salta** and **Jujuy**.
Expanding Critical Mineral Access
This initiative is crucial for India’s strategic goal of securing a reliable supply of critical minerals. Lithium is an essential component for the country’s rapidly growing electric vehicle and clean energy industries.
Argentina holds a significant position within the ‘Lithium Triangle’ in South America, which accounts for a substantial portion of the world’s identified lithium resources.
Bolstering Broader Trade Relations
Beyond critical minerals, the fourth meeting of the **India**-**Argentina** Joint Trade Committee (JTC) also yielded progress in other key sectors. Efforts are underway to facilitate market access for various Indian agricultural products.
Ongoing technical discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary measures aim to open doors for Indian onions, milk products, grapes, potatoes, bananas, and pulses in the Argentine market.
Significant strides were also made in the pharmaceutical sector, where Argentina has committed to upgrading India’s regulatory status. This upgrade, from Annex II to Annex I, will streamline approvals and reduce existing barriers for Indian pharmaceutical products.
Such an enhancement would position India alongside countries like the **US**, **UK**, and the **EU**, which are recognized for their stringent regulatory standards.
Further discussions are in progress to expand the Preferential Trade Agreement (**PTA**) between India and the **Mercosur** trade bloc, of which Argentina is a member. The goal is to include a greater number of tariff lines under this agreement.
The Indian delegation, led by **Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal**, also included a large business contingent. This group engaged directly with the Argentine business community to foster stronger economic ties.
