India plans to amend regulations within two months to address concerns of semiconductor and auto component manufacturers, aiming to streamline the business environment.

India will amend its existing regulations and introduce new rules within the next two months, directly addressing concerns raised by semiconductor and auto component manufacturers. This move comes as the government aims to streamline the regulatory environment for critical industrial sectors.

Addressing Industry Concerns

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that two major companies highlighted regulatory challenges. These included one firm focused on manufacturing semiconductor equipment and another operating within the automotive components sector in India.

The government has already significantly simplified the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) framework. Efforts are underway to further ease approval requirements, extending to suppliers not currently covered by revised regulations.

Minister Goyal also commented on situations involving imports from another country, particularly when goods are supplied at predatory prices. He noted that meeting demands from certain industry sectors under such conditions is challenging, a stance he affirmed without apology.

Boosting Semiconductor Ecosystem

Beyond regulatory adjustments, the Union Cabinet has already approved the Semicon 2.0 program. This initiative aims to strengthen India’s semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem.

The program has a substantial budget outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore.

Combined investments from the government and private sector are projected to reach approximately $50 billion.

These investments are expected in semiconductors and allied industries over the next year and a half. This commitment signifies a continuous growth trajectory, with plans for a future Semicon 3.0.

This ongoing commitment to refining regulations and investing heavily in the semiconductor sector underscores India’s strategic vision. It positions the nation for a sustained journey towards establishing a robust domestic manufacturing base, as indicated by future plans for Semicon 3.0.
