Ather Energy Invests ₹400-500 Cr in Mass-Market Monarc e-Scooter
By Business Desk
Ather Energy commits ₹400-500 Cr to its new Monarc e-scooter and EL platform, aiming for mass-market affordability with prices starting at ₹99,999.
Ather Energy has strategically committed between ₹400-500 crore towards the development of its new EL scooter platform and the Monarc e-scooter. This substantial investment underpins the company’s push into the mass-market segment with its most affordable model yet.
The Monarc, set to begin deliveries in September, launches with a starting price of ₹99,999 ex-showroom Bengaluru. It will be available across three variants: S100, S125, and S160.
Strategic Product Focus
Conceptualized in 2019 and actively developed from 2024, the EL platform prioritizes lower costs, simpler servicing, and easier charging. This marks a clear shift towards enhanced everyday usability over pure performance metrics.
Key features of the EL platform include onboard charging, AeBS, and extended 10,000 km service intervals. These elements are designed to make electric scooter ownership more accessible and convenient for a broader consumer base.
Ather Energy co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta confirmed that this investment specifically targets product development. Additional capital has been allocated separately for crucial go-to-market and marketing strategies.
Expanding Market Reach
The company anticipates robust performance for the Monarc, particularly within North and Central India, based on current market feedback. This geographic focus suggests a targeted approach to penetrate new growth regions.
Further bolstering its operational capacity, Ather is establishing a ₹2,000-crore manufacturing plant in Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC), Maharashtra. This facility will significantly scale production.
The new plant is engineered to produce up to one million units of vehicles and battery packs annually. This expansion is critical for meeting anticipated demand for the Monarc and future models.
In parallel, Ather introduced True Health for vehicle health reports and the fifth-generation Ather Bedrock battery platform. They also launched Ather Node, a specialized charging solution designed for apartment communities.
This comprehensive strategy, encompassing product innovation, manufacturing scale, and new service offerings, positions Ather Energy for considerable expansion. The focus on affordability and usability aims to capture a larger share of India’s evolving electric two-wheeler market.
