India Rejects Pakistan’s Kashmir Claims at UN, Cites POK Abuses
By ThePip Desk
India firmly rejects Pakistan’s UN claims on Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting POK human rights abuses and internal Pakistani failures.
India has unequivocally rejected Pakistan’s attempts to internationalize the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations Security Council. India’s Permanent Representative, Harish Parvathaneni, stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, asserting that Pakistan’s illegal occupation remains the sole unresolved matter.
India’s Stance on Kashmir and POK Human Rights
At the UNSC, India maintained its clear and consistent position regarding the region’s territorial status. Parvathaneni accused Pakistan of enacting systemic human rights violations within Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), explicitly describing this as a long-standing policy of oppression. India views Pakistan’s persistent focus on Kashmir at global forums as a deliberate diversionary tactic.
This tactic, India argued, serves to divert international attention from Pakistan’s own significant internal challenges and instability. These include both political and economic turmoil, which Pakistan has struggled to manage internally.
Exposing Pakistan’s Internal Democratic Decline
The Indian envoy further drew sharp attention to the deteriorating state of democracy inside Pakistan itself. He specifically cited several concerning developments that collectively indicate a profound collapse of democratic institutions within the country. Parvathaneni urged the Pakistani establishment to address these critical internal issues rather than propagating fabricated narratives on the international stage.
The specific indicators of democratic decline highlighted by Harish Parvathaneni included:
- The imprisonment of former political leadership.
- The exclusion of major opposition parties from the electoral process.
- The pervasive influence of the military on constitutional processes.
Advocating UN Security Council Reform
Beyond the direct bilateral dispute, India also contributed to a broader discussion regarding the overall effectiveness of the UN Security Council. During the session, India advocated for a rigorous review of the existing mandates under which the Council operates. This proposal included suggesting a stronger and more integrated role for regional organizations in managing conflicts globally.
