E-Rupee as a Safer Payment Method Amid UPI Fraud Concerns

Key Highlights

As UPI fraud cases rise, with 10.64 lakh cases involving ₹805 crore reported in FY26, the RBI is enhancing instant payment security. The e-rupee’s token model is being considered as a way to reduce scam risks.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is increasing its focus on the security of instant payment methods in light of a growing number of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) fraud cases. Concerns are mounting as 10.64 lakh UPI fraud incidents, involving a total of ₹805 crore, were reported in FY26 up to November.

In response to these escalating issues, the RBI is exploring whether the e-rupee, with its token-based model, could offer a more secure alternative for digital transactions, potentially mitigating the risks associated with scams.

The central bank is currently tightening the security measures surrounding instant payments to combat the rise in digital payment fraud. The e-rupee’s design, which uses a token system, is believed to provide an additional layer of security compared to traditional UPI transactions.

By utilizing the e-rupee, the RBI aims to provide a safer and more reliable payment ecosystem, reducing the vulnerability of users to fraudulent activities in the digital payments space.
