Indian equities closed a mixed session on Thursday, with the Nifty 50 posting a marginal gain of +11 points to settle at 24636.00. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) provided substantial support, recording net purchases of +₹4013.6 crore, largely counteracting the FII net outflow of −₹17.86 crore. This robust DII activity was a key factor in market stability, particularly as the Nifty Bank surged +0.56% to close at 58063.65.

FII and DII Flows

Domestic Institutional Investors continued their strong buying momentum, with Thursday marking their second consecutive session of significant net inflows. Over the last five sessions, DIIs have been net buyers in four, accumulating +₹9792.18 crore. In contrast, Foreign Institutional Investors registered a minor net outflow of −₹17.86 crore yesterday, following a larger outflow of −₹943.42 crore on August 5th. Despite these recent outflows, FIIs remain net buyers over the five-session period, with total net inflows of +₹2685.93 crore.

Sectoral Performance

Among the sectors, only two ended in positive territory. The top performing sector surged +2.20%, while the second best gained a marginal +0.07%. Conversely, several sectors saw declines, with the largest drop at −1.32%, followed by −1.01% and −0.95%. Another sector recorded a slight dip of −0.03%. The Nifty Midcap 100 also registered a decline of −0.44%, indicating broader market weakness.

Key Movers

Individual stock performance saw Reliance Industries Ltd. (+3.52%) and State Bank Of India (+2.84%) lead the Nifty 50 gainers. Bharat Electronics Ltd. (+2.36%), Eternal Ltd. (+1.90%), and Titan Company Ltd. (+1.74%) also posted strong gains. On the downside, Power Grid Corporation Of India Ltd. was the top loser, falling −3.90%. Other significant decliners included Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (−2.45%), Tata Steel Ltd. (−1.91%), JSW Steel Ltd. (−1.66%), and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (−1.66%).

As markets open today, the sustained DII buying trend will be a critical factor to observe, alongside the performance of the Nifty Bank and any early indications from major index heavyweights.
