Indian equity benchmarks concluded Thursday’s session with Nifty 50 registering a marginal decline, primarily influenced by significant selling pressure from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Despite this, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) provided strong counter-support, injecting ₹2986.41 cr into the market, which helped limit the downside for the broader indices.
| Index | Close | Change% |

| Nifty Bank | 57582.25 | −0.30% |

| Nifty 50 | 24072.75 | −0.02% |
FII and DII Flows
The trend of FII selling continued on Thursday, with the ₹4205.56 cr outflow. This marks the fourth consecutive session of net selling by FIIs, with cumulative outflows totaling ₹8743.35 cr over these four days (July 13-16). In stark contrast, DIIs have consistently been net buyers, providing robust support. Their buying activity on Thursday, at ₹2986.41 cr, follows substantial inflows on July 14 (₹2927.71 cr) and July 13 (₹2171.7 cr). This persistent DII buying has been crucial in absorbing the FII selling pressure.
Sector Performance
On the sectoral front, a mixed trend was observed. Top performing sectors gained +0.67%, +0.46%, and +0.25% respectively, indicating pockets of strength. Another sector also saw a marginal gain of +0.02%. Conversely, underperforming sectors experienced declines of −0.98%, −0.51%, and −0.46%, reflecting broader weakness in certain segments of the market.

Among the Nifty 50 constituents, Interglobe Aviation Ltd. (INDIGO) led the gainers, rising +1.83% to ₹5265.5. Wipro Ltd. (WIPRO) and HCL Technologies Ltd. (HCLTECH) also saw positive momentum, advancing +1.77% and +1.66% respectively. Bajaj Finance Ltd. (BAJFINANCE) and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MARUTI) rounded out the top five gainers. (HDFCBANK) closed −0.88% lower.
What to Watch at 9:15 AM
With Nifty 50 closing at 24072.75, the market breadth was evenly split with 26 advances and 24 declines. The persistent FII selling, offset by strong DII buying, suggests a continued tug-of-war between institutional investors. Traders should monitor early FII activity and global cues for direction as the market opens at 9:15 AM IST.
