Nifty 50 closes at 24614.90, registering a 0.64% decline. FIIs maintained buying interest, yet broad market sentiment remains subdued. Traders eye a cautious open at 9:15 AM.

Indian equity markets experienced a notable downturn on Tuesday, with the Nifty 50 shedding −159 points, or −0.64%, to close at 24614.90. The broader market sentiment remained cautious, as both the Nifty Bank and NIFTY Midcap 100 also registered declines. This occurred despite continued buying interest from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), highlighting a divergence between institutional flows and overall market performance.

Name Close Change%
Nifty Bank 57907.20 −0.58%
NIFTY Midcap 100 63491.60 −0.29%
Nifty 50 24614.90 −0.64%

FII and DII Flows

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) maintained their positive momentum for the fifth consecutive trading session, recording net purchases of +2446.47 crore on August 4. This consistent inflow from FIIs suggests sustained confidence in specific segments of the Indian market. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net sellers, offloading −936.14 crore. The contrasting activity between FIIs and DIIs indicates a nuanced market dynamic, where foreign capital continues to find opportunities even as domestic funds book profits or rebalance portfolios.

Sectoral Performance

Sectoral performance on Tuesday was predominantly negative, reflecting the cautious mood across the indices. The top declining sectors saw significant drops of −2.39%, −0.88%, and −0.82% respectively. Further declines were observed in other sectors, registering −0.52%, −0.44%, −0.24%, and −0.08%. This broad-based weakness across various sectors underscores the prevailing cautious sentiment among investors, despite the Nifty 50’s relatively balanced market breadth of 26 advances against 24 declines.

Top Movers in Nifty 50

Among the Nifty 50 constituents, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. (APOLLOHOSP) emerged as the top gainer, closing +2.61% higher at ₹9050. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (HEROMOTOCO) which rose +1.61% to ₹5548. JIO Financial Services Ltd. (JIOFIN) also saw a modest gain of +0.76%, closing at ₹265.

(MAXHEALTH) both closed lower by −2.13%, at ₹1290.9 and ₹1077 respectively.

What to Watch at 9:15 AM

Given the Nifty 50’s close below the 24,700 mark and the mixed institutional activity with FIIs buying and DIIs selling, traders should anticipate a potentially cautious and volatile opening for Wednesday’s session. Key levels and early market cues will be crucial in determining intraday trends.
