Sector Performance

Monday’s session was dominated by the Information Technology (IT) sector, which surged by an impressive +3.59%. This strong showing provided crucial support to the broader market. Other sectors that closed in positive territory included Auto, up +0.45%, and Financial Services (implied by Nifty Bank’s performance). Conversely, the Metals sector experienced a decline of −1.02%, making it the biggest laggard. FMCG and Pharma also ended the day with negative returns, down −0.15% and −0.12% respectively.

Top Movers Analysis

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 were predominantly from the IT space, reflecting the sector’s robust performance. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) led the pack with a gain of +5.44%, closing at ₹2181.5. HCL Technologies Ltd. (HCLTECH) followed closely, rising +4.91% to ₹1221.2. Tech Mahindra Ltd. (TECHM) and Infosys Ltd. (INFY) also posted significant gains of +3.42% and +3.24%, respectively. Bajaj Auto Ltd. (BAJAJ-AUTO) was another notable gainer, up +2.22%.

On the losing side, Grasim Industries Ltd. (GRASIM) saw the steepest decline, falling −2.16% to ₹3144.3. Tata Steel Ltd. (TATASTEEL) also faced selling pressure, down −2.13%. Nestle India Ltd. (NESTLEIND) dropped −1.94%, while Interglobe Aviation Ltd. (INDIGO) and Eternal Ltd. (ETERNAL) registered declines of −1.55% and −1.54%, respectively.

FII and DII Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net sellers on July 13, offloading equities worth −₹3062.27 crore. This marks a shift after FIIs were net buyers in the preceding two sessions (July 10 and July 8). Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, remained net buyers, injecting +₹2171.7 crore into the market. Over the last five sessions, FII activity has been mixed, with net buying on July 10 (+₹2603.72 crore) and July 8 (+₹1962.8 crore), but also selling on July 9 (−₹532.86 crore) and July 7 (+₹393.19 crore). DIIs have consistently been net buyers in four out of the last five sessions, providing a counter-balance to FII outflows.

Ahead of the Open

The market breadth for the Nifty 50 was nearly balanced, with 26 advances and 24 declines. The strong performance of the IT sector, driven by major players, suggests continued interest in technology stocks. However, the FII selling on Monday could introduce some cautious sentiment. Traders will closely monitor the early cues for Tuesday’s session, particularly how the IT sector opens and if FII flows reverse or continue their selling trend.

The Nifty 50 opens Tuesday’s session at 24211.00, with market participants watching for sustained IT momentum or broader consolidation.
