Global Cues
Global markets presented a mixed picture. US markets ended mostly lower on Wednesday as investors digested corporate earnings and economic data, including a slight uptick in the ISM Services PMI. Asian stocks mostly closed lower on Thursday, influenced by profit booking due to anxiety over AI spending and soft financial outlooks from major tech entities. Lingering uncertainty around the US-Iran conflict and hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve also weighed on sentiment. South Korea’s KOSPI notably plunged due to extreme retail leverage in single-stock ETFs.
Currency & Bond Markets
The Indian Rupee weakened against the US Dollar on Thursday, closing at 95.23 (Provisional), down 15 paise from its previous close. In the bond market, yields on the new 10-year Government Stock traded marginally lower at 6.76%, a 1 basis point decrease from Wednesday’s close.
Economy & Policy
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) highlighted the increasing resilience of India’s rural economy and agriculture sector, supported by growth in allied activities and improved farm mechanisation. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated that India is on track to become a $5-trillion economy by FY29, driven by a broad-based growth strategy. The government has also proposed significant relaxations to the eligibility criteria for Eligible Investment Funds (EIFs) managed from India, aiming to enhance the country’s position as a global fund management hub. However, an RBI survey indicated that manufacturing firms’ optimism on demand conditions weakened in Q1 FY27, with sentiments on production and order books declining amid geopolitical tensions.

The divergence between Sensex and Nifty, partly due to the new closing auction session, suggests selective strength in large-cap driven sectors like banking and energy, while broader markets show some consolidation.
