Global Cues

Asian markets mostly closed higher on Monday, tracking gains on Wall Street last Friday. US jobs data for July, showing a more modest decrease than anticipated, eased concerns about an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. However, uncertainty persists regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s conditions for reopening the strait dampened hopes for stability in global energy markets. Chinese and Hong Kong shares gained on signs of persistent deflationary pressures, reinforcing expectations of continued policy support for the economy. Japan’s Nikkei soared despite a sharp dip in the current account surplus for June.

Currency / Forex

The Indian Rupee weakened against the US dollar on Monday, closing at 95.30, down 13 paise from its previous close of 95.17.

Economy / Macro

A US Senate bill imposing sanctions on Russia could expose Indian exports to additional tariffs of up to 100% if India continues to purchase Russian crude oil, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that the government’s sustained capital expenditure push has encouraged private sector investment. The RBI noted that the rural economy and agriculture sector have gained resilience over the years, supported by allied activities and improved farming practices. S&P Global Ratings warned that Asia-Pacific economies, including India, remain susceptible to El Nino-driven shocks, primarily through reduced agricultural output and higher food inflation.

RBI / Policy

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) maintained credit momentum in June 2026, with credit growth accelerating to 14.4% year-on-year. Credit growth in agriculture and allied activities recorded a robust 17.9% increase. Additionally, India crossed the 300 gigawatts (GW) milestone in non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026, achieving over 60% of its 2030 target.
