Global Cues

Asian markets largely ended lower on Monday, mirroring Wall Street’s decline and heightened concerns over escalating conflict in the Middle East. The US military conducted airstrikes in Iran, leading to Tehran declaring a collapse of its ceasefire with the US and intercepting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This geopolitical tension pushed Brent crude prices past $90 a barrel, fueling global inflation anxieties. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged due to a massive sell-off in semiconductor stocks, while Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.

Currency & Macro

The rupee softened marginally against the dollar, closing at 96.36. Bond yields traded slightly higher, with the new 10-year Government Stock yielding 6.79%. On the economic front, India and the EU are actively working on proposed Investment Protection and Geographical Indications agreements, with a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected by the end of 2026. However, Crisil has warned of a potential medium-term funding gap, advocating for the development of India’s corporate debt market. Inflation remains a key concern, with wholesale inflation elevated at 9.87% in June, and retail inflation jumping to 4.38%, breaching the RBI’s medium-term target of 4%.
