Global Cues

US markets closed sharply lower on Friday, primarily due to weakness in technology stocks and a strong non-farm payroll report. Asian markets also settled mostly lower, with South Korea’s Kospi experiencing a significant drop amid a sell-off in AI and semiconductor stocks. Lingering Middle East tensions continue to add to global market uncertainty.

Economy / Macro

India’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) equity inflows surged by 18% to $58.84 billion in 2025-26. The OECD projects India’s real GDP to grow by 6.3% in FY27 and 6.4% in FY28. However, Crisil has warned that rising fuel prices are likely to exert fresh inflationary pressures on the Indian economy.

RBI / Policy

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) revised its FY27 GDP growth forecast downward to 6.6% from an earlier projection of 6.9%. Despite global uncertainties, India’s GDP growth jumped to 7.7% in the fiscal year 2025-26, maintaining its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Inflation / CPI

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation accelerated to 8.30% in April 2026. Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation also rose to 3.48% in April, driven by an uptick in food prices.
