Indian Multi-Cap Funds See ₹18K Cr Inflows Amidst Mixed Returns
By Market Desk
Indian multi-cap mutual funds attracted ₹18,077 crore in H1 2026 inflows, but performance varied widely, highlighting the need for careful selection.
Indian multi-cap mutual funds recorded substantial net inflows of ₹18,077 crore during the first half of 2026, demonstrating consistent investor interest. However, this period also saw highly divergent performance across individual schemes.
These funds, designed to offer broad market exposure, received consistent monthly investments from January to June. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) reported April as the strongest month for these new investments.
Key Inflow Metrics
- Total H1 2026 Net Inflows: ₹18,077 crore
- Strongest Month (April): ₹3,806 crore
- June Inflows: ₹3,070 crore
SEBI regulations mandate a minimum of 25% allocation to large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks for multi-cap funds. This structure provides fund managers with flexibility to adjust capital allocation based on economic outlook and corporate earnings.
Despite the significant inflows, individual multi-cap schemes displayed inconsistent returns as of July 28, 2026. This disparity highlights the varying outcomes for investors.
Performance Disparity (as of July 28, 2026)
- Double-Digit Returns: Groww Multicap Direct, Trust MF Multicap Direct, Bank of India Multicap Direct
- Negative Returns: Samco Multi Cap Fund, SBI Multicap Fund, HDFC Multi Cap Fund, Invesco India Multicap Fund
This divergence in performance is primarily attributed to how fund managers allocate the mandatory 25% share within the more volatile mid-cap and small-cap segments. Such strategic choices directly impact scheme returns.
Investors are advised that high inflows do not guarantee uniform performance across multi-cap funds. They should assess their risk tolerance, align with the fund manager’s strategy, and consider historical performance across various market cycles, given the inherent higher risks associated with mid- and small-cap holdings.
