Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) injected Rs 12,921 crore into Indian equities during the first week of August. This inflow continues a positive trend observed in July, marking a significant shift in investor behavior after a period of withdrawals.
Despite these recent investments, FPIs remain net sellers in Indian equities for the year 2026. The current buying spree follows four consecutive months of substantial selling activity earlier in the year.

Market analysts attribute this renewed FPI interest to a confluence of favorable conditions. Improving macroeconomic stability and a more stable Indian rupee have contributed to the positive sentiment.

Vedant Gupte, Co-Founder and CEO of Trackk, noted that the relatively low foreign ownership of Indian equities presents further opportunities for new investments. He also highlighted that a significant portion of this recent buying occurred in the secondary market, signaling a preference for established listed companies over initial public offerings.
Pabitro Mukherjee of Bajaj Broking further confirmed that reduced geopolitical tensions have strengthened overall investor confidence. FPIs have demonstrated a clear preference for specific sectors within the Indian market, reflecting targeted investment strategies.
The sectors favored by foreign investors include automobiles, consumer durables, and healthcare. Additionally, FPIs extended their investment scope to the debt market, channeling Rs 622 crore through the general route during the same period.
