Supertails Raises $30M to Transform India Pet Care

Key Highlights
Supertails secures $30M to revolutionize India’s pet care industry, focusing on a care-first model and meeting the demands of new-age ‘pet parents’.
Indian pet care startup Supertails has raised $30 million in new funding, bringing its total capital to $57 million. This investment underscores a significant shift in India’s pet care sector, which is evolving from simple transactions to a comprehensive care-oriented approach.
Vineet Khanna, Co-founder of Supertails, discussed the company’s strategic decision to prioritize a complex, care-focused model early on. “You can’t build pets as a marketplace alone. You can’t just do transactions. You have to build a care infrastructure,” Khanna stated in a conversation with Shradha Sharma.
The pet care industry in India has seen substantial changes. Initially sentiment-driven with limited scale, the market began to transform during the COVID-19 pandemic as pet adoption rates increased. This surge led to a new generation of consumers who view themselves as “pet parents,” seeking more involvement, higher-quality products, and extensive support.
Currently, about 85% of pet parents in India are first-timers, creating a demand not only for products but also for knowledge, guidance, and consistent care. Supertails aims to meet these needs by developing a comprehensive system that goes beyond basic commerce.
The company’s approach includes faster delivery services for essential items like food and medicine, along with addressing critical gaps in healthcare access. Supertails is establishing clinics, teleconsultation services, and a network of trained veterinarians to provide better healthcare options. Additionally, the company is building a data layer to personalize services based on the individual needs of each pet.
Supertails’ strategy involves a phased rollout, starting with a marketplace, expanding into accessories, adding teleconsultation, and then moving into medicine fulfillment and clinics. This methodical growth extends to customer retention, with a focus on ensuring a positive experience across all touchpoints.
The company captures pet names and birthdays to send personalized gifts, fostering a sense of familiarity and care that enhances customer loyalty beyond pricing or promotions.
With the new funding, Supertails plans to expand its healthcare footprint, starting with a denser network of clinics in Bangalore. The company remains focused on enhancing access and consistency of care rather than rapid expansion.
Supertails’ core operating principle emphasizes that in the pet care sector, care must be integral to the business model, driving growth as a natural outcome.
