Indian equity markets extended losses for a fourth consecutive day on August 14, 2026, as surging crude oil prices and foreign investor selling weighed on the Nifty and Sensex.

Indian equity markets recorded their fourth consecutive day of losses on Friday, August 14, 2026, as both the Nifty and Sensex closed lower. The Nifty dropped 0.12%, while the Sensex fell 0.19% to 77,931.

Market Snapshot: August 14, 2026

  • Nifty: Down 0.12%
  • Sensex: Down 0.19% to 77,931
  • Brent Crude Prices: Surged 5%

This market downturn was primarily driven by a sharp increase in crude oil prices and persistent selling pressure from overseas investors. Broader markets, including the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100, also extended their losing streaks for the day.

The 5% surge in Brent crude prices stemmed from the United States’ preparations to impose significant economic sanctions on Iran. These measures aim to isolate Iran and weaken its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical strategic point since the conflict began in late February.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington plans to implement unprecedented economic measures while maintaining its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Further announcements are anticipated regarding these actions.

Sectoral Performance Overview

  • Pharmaceutical: Led declines, falling 0.90%
  • Other major losers (>0.50%): Metals, Auto, Cement, PSU Banks, Nifty Oil & Gas
  • Media: Gained 1%
  • Consumer Durables: Rose 0.76%

Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, noted that renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which drove crude oil higher, overshadowed positive global market signals. This dynamic ultimately led Indian equity markets to close lower.

Despite the overall decline, the Nifty 50 successfully defended the 24,325 support zone for the second consecutive session. Among the top individual losers for the day were NALCO, HPCL, Tata Motors PV, Netweb Tech, and Hindustan Copper.
