Gold Surges 9% As Investors Flock to Safer Money Markets
By ThePip Desk
Gold prices jumped 9% in July 2026, but investors poured Rs 1.4 lakh crore into money market funds, signaling a strong preference for safety and stability.
Gold prices surged, recording a robust 9% return in July 2026, significantly outperforming broader equities. Despite this rally, investors largely steered clear of precious metals, instead channeling a substantial Rs 1.4 lakh crore into money market funds.
This notable shift indicates a strong preference for safer assets, according to Vallum Capital’s monthly report. Investors are prioritizing stability over aggressively pursuing market highs, even amidst strong performances in certain sectors.
Fund Flow Dynamics
Precious metal fund inflows saw a sharp decrease, falling from Rs 8,680 crore in June to Rs 4,084 crore in July. This contrasts with money market funds, which experienced a massive inflow in July after an outflow the previous month.
Fixed-income funds also reversed their trend. After significant outflows in June, these funds attracted Rs 5,947 crore during July.
Equity Sector Performance
Within the Indian market, the automobile and transport sectors demonstrated exceptional performance. Technology stocks also showed signs of recovery during July.
Despite the tech recovery, technology funds recorded outflows as investors capitalized on the gains by selling. Healthcare, however, attracted fresh capital, indicating targeted investment interest.
Banking stocks presented a divergent picture, with Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks outperforming their private counterparts. Micro-cap funds emerged as the strongest performers across fund categories.
Large-cap funds, despite weaker year-to-date returns, continued to attract significant inflows, signaling sustained investor confidence in established companies.
Global Market Snapshot
Globally, China’s semiconductor ETF registered a substantial gain, contrasting sharply with a decline in Korea’s semiconductor ETF. Gold miners delivered a strong performance, aligning with the overall rally in the precious metal.
The July 2026 market dynamics highlight a cautious investor approach, favoring capital preservation through money market funds despite strong returns in gold and specific equity segments. This trend suggests a sustained focus on safety amidst fluctuating market conditions.
