DME-LPG Blend: Save India ₹34,200 Cr & Cut Imports

Key Highlights

DME-LPG blend (20%) can save India 6.3 MT of LPG annually, worth ₹34,200 Cr. BIS approved. Boost domestic DME for more savings!

India has the potential to significantly reduce its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports by adopting a 20 percent blend of dimethyl ether (DME), which can be derived from coal gasification. According to a recent report, this shift could lead to an annual reduction of 6.3 million tonnes in LPG imports.

The financial impact of such a reduction is substantial, with potential savings exceeding USD 4 billion in foreign exchange, equivalent to approximately ₹34,200 crore yearly. The Bureau of Indian Standards has already approved the use of this blending ratio, paving the way for its implementation.

Currently, domestic production of DME remains limited. However, industry experts believe that the establishment of a clear and supportive policy framework could stimulate investments in this sector, boosting local DME production and further diminishing the reliance on imported LPG.
