Indian Markets Recover: Sensex Narrows Loss, Nifty Down 0.20%
By ThePip Desk
Indian equity benchmarks recover from lows. Sensex down 0.06%, Nifty 0.20%, boosted by telecom stocks & Asian markets. Crude oil prices & Mideast tensions add caution.
Indian equity benchmarks showed some recovery during early afternoon trading, moving off their intraday low points, even as both the Sensex and Nifty remained in the red.
The BSE Sensex was trading at 77321.02, down 48.09 points or 0.06%, after fluctuating between 77125.91 and 77390.72. The Nifty recorded a sharper decline of approximately 0.20%.
Market Dynamics
This partial recovery was primarily driven by buying activity in telecom counters, complemented by positive signals from other Asian markets. However, elevated crude oil prices and ongoing Middle East tensions continued to keep investors cautious.
Expiry-related volatility also contributed to market pressure, with traders keenly observing the Nifty 50’s first monthly derivatives expiry under the new closing auction session for stocks with futures and options contracts.
Global and Domestic Insights
Across Asia, all markets traded in positive territory. Japan’s leading index remained stable at 116.5 in June, consistent with its May reading, which was revised up from 116.4.
Domestically, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, emphasized India’s robust macroeconomic fundamentals and its increasing appeal as a long-term investment destination during his engagements in Tokyo. He noted India’s 7.7% growth last year and its aspiration to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047.
Conversely, FICCI President Anant Goenka highlighted concerns for Indian exporters, citing difficulties in accessing the Japanese market and a widening trade deficit. Stringent certification and regulatory requirements were also identified as key concerns.
