Zepto Delays IPO by 2-3 Quarters Amid Valuation Concerns

By Business DeskZepto Delays IPO by 2-3 Quarters Amid Valuation Concerns

Quick commerce startup Zepto postpones IPO by 2-3 quarters due to investor valuation concerns. Company now seeks Rs 1,000 crore in pre-IPO funding.

Quick commerce startup Zepto has officially postponed its initial public offering (IPO) by two to three quarters. This significant decision was communicated directly to employees by co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha during a recent company town hall.

The primary reason for this delay stems from a less-than-favorable response from potential investors regarding the company’s current valuation. This unexpected market sentiment has necessitated a strategic re-evaluation of Zepto’s public market ambitions.

Zepto, which commanded a valuation of $7 billion in October last year, is now being valued by domestic investors at a significantly reduced $3-3.5 billion. This substantial discrepancy presents a considerable hurdle for its planned public debut.

Strategic Funding Shift

Instead of proceeding with the initial public offering, the company is now actively seeking to raise approximately Rs 1,000 crore, equivalent to around $105 million, through pre-IPO funding. This immediate capital injection is designed to stabilize its financial position and investor perception.

For this upcoming pre-IPO funding round, Zepto aims to secure a valuation between $4-4.5 billion. This revised valuation target is specifically designed to attract and secure commitments from domestic investors.

The original ambition for Zepto’s IPO included an issue size projected to reach up to Rs 8,010 crore. This figure underscores the considerable scale of the public market debut that has now been put on hold.

Zepto’s adjusted strategy highlights the challenging dynamics faced by Indian startups in aligning investor expectations with their internal growth projections. The company now prioritizes securing a more agreeable valuation in the private market before revisiting its IPO plans.
