Wingreens Acquires Safe Harvest, Boosts Clean-Label Platform

Key Highlights
Wingreens acquires pesticide-free brand Safe Harvest, creating a vertically integrated farm-to-consumer platform. Bolstered by ₹120 crore Series D funding.
Wingreens Strengthens Clean-Label Offering with Safe Harvest Acquisition
Packaged food and beverage company Wingreens has announced the acquisition of Safe Harvest, a prominent brand in the pesticide-free food segment. This strategic move, structured as a 100% share-swap deal, signifies Wingreens’ commitment to establishing a vertically integrated farm-to-consumer food platform. The acquisition is closely timed with Wingreens’ successful completion of its Series D funding round, which secured ₹120 crore and was led by investor Ashish Kacholia, with participation from Alchemy Fund. This dual development positions Wingreens to significantly enhance its presence in the rapidly growing clean food category.
The integration of Safe Harvest into the Wingreens portfolio creates a robust three-brand core, comprising Wingreens Farms, Raw Pressery, and the newly acquired Safe Harvest. The company articulates this expansion as a pivotal step towards building one of India’s most trusted integrated food and beverage platforms, emphasizing health, transparency, and sustainable sourcing as its foundational pillars. Safe Harvest brings substantial scale and expertise in the clean-label and pesticide-free domain, boasting a network of over 100,000 farmers, predominantly women organized through Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). The brand is particularly recognized for its rigorous batch-wise pesticide testing system, applied across a wide range of products including cereals, grains, millets, pulses, flours, spices, oils, honey, and natural sweeteners.
Strategic Funding Fuels Expansion and Integration
The ₹120 crore Series D fundraise, led by Ashish Kacholia and supported by Alchemy Fund, provides Wingreens with crucial capital to accelerate its growth strategy. This funding is earmarked for expanding distribution networks, enhancing supply chain integration, driving product innovation, and deepening farmer partnerships. The company anticipates that these investments will significantly bolster its portfolio growth over the next two years. This latest funding round follows a substantial equity round in November 2021, where Wingreens raised ₹124 crore (approximately $17 million) led by Investcorp, underscoring continued investor confidence in the company’s business model and market potential.
Wingreens’ management has characterized the current phase as one focused on scale-building, underpinned by profitability and strong institutional backing. The combination of operational breakeven and newly acquired capital provides Wingreens with the financial flexibility to explore new product categories while simultaneously strengthening its farm-level linkages across its diverse brands. This strategic alignment of capital and operational readiness is expected to propel the company’s expansion into new markets and product segments.
Building a Diversified Food and Beverage Portfolio
The acquisition of Safe Harvest is the latest in Wingreens’ strategic approach to portfolio expansion, which has historically involved both organic brand development and selective acquisitions. This strategy has positioned the company as a multi-category, better-for-you food platform. Prior significant expansions include the acquisition of Raw Pressery, the beverage brand, which broadened Wingreens’ reach beyond dips and spreads into the premium beverage sector. The integration of Raw Pressery enhanced its presence in the refrigerated and functional beverage segment, facilitating cross-distribution opportunities across modern retail and e-commerce channels.
Wingreens Farms, the company’s flagship brand, laid the groundwork for its retail presence, establishing its identity in dips, sauces, spreads, snacks, and value-added foods. This brand pioneered Wingreens’ focus on being a purpose-driven food company, championing women-led livelihoods and supply chain innovation. Safe Harvest now complements these established brands by introducing a strong rural sourcing backbone and reinforcing the group’s positioning in natural and pesticide-free foods. This segment has seen increasing demand from urban consumers who prioritize traceable and transparent supply chains.
Synergies in Mission and Market Positioning
A key driver for the Safe Harvest acquisition was the significant overlap in values between the two organizations. Wingreens was founded with a social mission to create sustainable livelihoods for women through the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN). Similarly, Safe Harvest emerged from farmer organizations dedicated to promoting natural farming and pesticide-free produce. This alignment of mission-led objectives positions the deal as more than a financial transaction; it represents the consolidation of like-minded organizations aiming to scale their positive impact while upholding stringent quality and certification standards.
With Safe Harvest now integrated, Wingreens’ comprehensive product portfolio spans dips, sauces, snacks, juices, and pesticide-free staples, covering both refrigerated and ambient product categories. The company intends to leverage this broad portfolio to strengthen relationships with retailers and expand its national footprint. The leadership has indicated that the evolution of this integrated platform, combining strong consumer brands with direct farmer linkages, could pave the way for future strategic options, including a potential public market listing.
