Westinghouse unveils ambitious global reactor vision with 91 AP1000 units, files for IPO, and partners Amentum for SMR development.

Westinghouse has unveiled a comprehensive long-term strategy, signaling a significant push in the global nuclear energy sector. The company’s vision includes the potential deployment of up to 91 AP1000 reactors worldwide, alongside a confidential filing for an (IPO).

This strategic expansion is further bolstered by a new partnership with Amentum, aimed at accelerating both AP1000 fleet deployment and the advancement of the AP300 small modular reactor (SMR) platform.

Global Reactor Pipeline Takes Shape

The ambitious AP1000 pipeline projects approximately 105 GWe of new nuclear power generation. These projects are distributed across various stages of development globally.

  • 10 reactors are supported by Department of Energy (DOE) loans.
  • Another 10 reactors are backed by a strategic partnership with the Department of Commerce.
  • Specific units include 3 in Poland, 2 in Bulgaria, and 2 in Ukraine.
  • 11 units are currently in the front-end engineering and design (FEED) stage across the Netherlands, Slovenia, Finland/Sweden, and the United States.

The largest segment, comprising up to 51 reactors, is in the ‘origination’ stage, targeting countries like the United States, Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, and Slovakia. These nations are exploring nuclear options for carbon-free energy and enhanced energy security, with commercial operation dates projected between the early 2030s and early 2040s.

IPO Filing Signals Strategic Shift

In parallel with its operational expansion, Westinghouse has confidentially filed a draft registration statement with the Securities and Commission for a proposed IPO. Details regarding the number of shares and price range remain undisclosed.

Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel noted that the company is currently limited in what it can reveal about the IPO at this stage, pending market and other conditions.

Amentum Partnership Fuels SMR Development

Further solidifying its strategic direction, Westinghouse announced a series of agreements with global engineering firm Amentum. This collaboration is designed to enhance Westinghouse’s efforts for AP1000 fleet-scale deployment.

  • The partnership will advance the development of its AP300 SMR through the APX technology platform.
  • It is expected to accelerate the licensing process for the AP300 SMR with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • The collaboration will also enhance both companies’ engineering and execution capabilities for delivering 1-gigawatt reactors at scale.

This history of collaboration between Westinghouse and Amentum spans nuclear power and decommissioning projects across multiple countries, underscoring a proven working relationship.

These combined initiatives — a robust reactor deployment strategy, a move towards public markets, and a focused partnership for SMR advancement — position Westinghouse for substantial growth within the evolving global energy landscape, addressing demands for both scale and innovation in nuclear power.
