The 18th edition of the Namu Recommends Vegan Market recently took place in Bengaluru at the Chamara Vajra venue. This two-day event celebrated conscious living, bringing together over 130 vegan and sustainable brands from across India.

Founded by Namu Kini, who also co-founded the art platform KYNKYNY.com, the market has evolved from a small initiative focused on conscious choices into a platform for vegan entrepreneurs and consumers.

According to Kini, the market began with the idea of uniting individuals passionate about conscious living, quality food, and compassionate choices. It has since developed into a community where small businesses and mindful consumers can connect and support each other, promoting a lifestyle centered on kindness, sustainability, and curiosity.

The market featured a diverse array of exhibits, including food, fashion, wellness products, home goods, and lifestyle items. Attendees enjoyed vegan popsicles from The Perf Ice Candy, upcycled fashion from Un Denim, fresh produce from Origin Fresh, and plant-based nutrition from Origin Nutrition. Other vendors included ATE and Akunka with natural snacks, Millie’s Vegan Cheese with artisan spreads, Green Goobé with eco-friendly cleaning products, and Bliss by Anju with vegan treats.

The Namu Recommends Vegan Market started in 2021, almost by accident. Kini explained that it began as a favor to a friend, organizing a pop-up shop with homegrown vegan brands. The event drew hundreds of visitors, and stalls sold out quickly.

That initial success, according to Kini, made it clear that Bangalore was ready for such an event. The market has since expanded from 13 stalls to over 130, with a vision to support vegan brands and raise awareness about veganism in India.

Kini has observed several trends in India’s vegan sector, including increased demand for high-protein foods, such as protein powders, supplements, and snacks, as well as nutraceutical and longevity supplements tailored for vegans. Vegan ice cream is also gaining popularity.

Kini also addressed some common misconceptions about veganism, such as the belief that vegans struggle to obtain enough protein, despite the availability of plant-based sources and supplements. She noted that many people mistakenly believe veganism is expensive, while much of Indian cuisine is naturally vegan, including affordable staples like dal, rajma, chole, vegetable sabzis, idli, dosa, poha, upma, and roti.

For aspiring vegan entrepreneurs, Kini advises keeping products simple, easy to understand, and easy to use. She also stressed that food products must be delicious. Rather than emphasizing the vegan aspect in marketing, she suggests focusing on the product’s quality, taste, and overall appeal, especially since the category is still new to many consumers.

The market has evolved into a popular weekend destination for families, food enthusiasts, and individuals interested in sustainable living.
