US-India Trade: DTH Satellite Policy & Internet Shutdowns

US and India satellite communication dialogue.
Key Highlights
US cites India’s DTH satellite preference and internet shutdowns as trade barriers. Concerns raised over market access and operational costs for foreign entities.
The United States has raised concerns over India’s inclination towards utilizing domestic satellites for direct-to-home (DTH) services, as well as the implementation of localized internet shutdowns, citing these practices as impediments to foreign trade.
According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the existing restrictions imposed on foreign satellite operators, which include mandatory routing of services through the Indian Space Research Organisation’s commercial arm, create limitations in market access and contribute to increased operational costs.
