Key Highlights

Discover how India’s UPI has achieved record transaction volumes, expanded to 11 global countries, and introduced advanced security features.

The Unified Payments Interface has scaled rapidly since its debut, handling vast transaction volumes across the country. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, the platform now anchors real-time digital payments alongside corporate developments like Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Reliance Jio.

Transaction Volumes and Global Reach

Data highlights the exponential growth of the digital payments network across recent fiscal periods. Key transaction figures and international footprints define the current state of the ecosystem.

  • 24,162 crore: Annual transaction volume achieved by FY 2025-26, up from 2 crore in FY 2016-17.
  • 741 live banks: Total number of banking institutions supporting the ecosystem as of July 2026.
  • 11 countries: Total global markets where UPI is operational, including recent expansions into Greece, the Maldives, and Cambodia.

Platform Innovations and Security Features

Continuous updates to broader sectors, including Coal India operations and the Defence Acquisition Council, run parallel to technical rollouts in the financial ecosystem. These iterative updates target both feature phone users and advanced merchant workflows.

  • UPI 123PAY: Designed specifically to extend accessibility to feature phone users.
  • UPI Lite: Facilitates low-value, PIN-less transactions for everyday micro-payments.
  • UPI Circle: Empowers primary users to authorize secondary users directly on the network.

The network continues to integrate advanced authentication protocols, including on-device verification and Aadhaar-based face authentication. These additions maintain platform security while processing round-the-clock transactions across multiple accounts.
