UCIL Boosts Uranium Output for India’s 100 GW Nuclear Energy Goal

Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is committed to a substantial increase in its uranium production, directly supporting India’s ambitious goal of achieving 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047. This strategic push underscores UCIL’s critical role in securing the nation’s nuclear fuel supply, aligning with the ‘Vikshit Bharat’ vision.

Dr. K Anand Rao, chairman-cum-managing director of UCIL, emphasized the public sector unit’s continuous efforts to enhance both mining and processing capacities. This expansion is essential to meet the significant demands of India’s long-term energy program.

Expanding Production Footprint

UCIL’s corporate strategy involves a multi-pronged approach to scale up operations and secure new reserves. The company is actively pursuing new mining activities and exploration across key regions.

• New potential uranium reserve sites are being explored nationwide, including Tummalapalle in Andhra Pradesh.
• Existing mines in Jharkhand continue to operate, forming a crucial part of the current supply chain.
• An agreement with Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) will allow UCIL to utilize HCL’s tailing pond for uranium extraction and processing.
• Plans include expanding the capacity of the Tummalapalle plant and establishing a new tailing pond to ensure efficient operation.

Further bolstering its pipeline, UCIL is actively seeking environmental clearances for its proposed Rohil project in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, where mine development is already underway. These initiatives are critical for maintaining production balance and augmenting output at the Jaduguda and Turamdih mills.

Strategic Implications for Self-Reliance

The collective efforts by UCIL highlight a clear through-line: India’s drive towards self-reliance in the nuclear energy sector. The company’s dedication will be prominently celebrated during its Diamond Jubilee, commencing on October 4.
