TRAI Consults on 5G Network Slicing Quality & User Experience

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has commenced a consultation process to establish a regulatory framework for the quality of service in 5G network slicing. This initiative is crucial as telecom operators seek to monetize their 5G investments through specialized enterprise services.

Network slicing is emerging as a significant revenue stream, extending beyond conventional consumer mobile broadband offerings. This technology enables operators to create multiple virtual networks on a single 5G infrastructure. Each virtual network can be customized for specific applications.

Understanding 5G Network Slicing

This customization supports various specialized use cases, including advanced manufacturing, critical healthcare applications, and autonomous mobility solutions. It also facilitates the development of smart cities infrastructure. TRAI is actively seeking stakeholder input on how to effectively measure and monitor the quality of these tailored services.

A primary concern for the regulator is ensuring that the introduction of these new services does not negatively impact the experience of regular mobile users. The consultation paper proposes that operators should individually monitor the quality of each network slice.
