Singapore’s Temasek boosts India investments in industrials and AI, targeting significant growth despite global uncertainties. India remains a top-performing market.

Temasek, Singapore’s state-owned investor, is significantly expanding its India investment scope, moving beyond traditional sectors into industrials and artificial intelligence. This strategic pivot aligns with India’s burgeoning manufacturing capabilities and the global surge in AI opportunities.

Strategic Shift Towards New Growth Engines

The company’s India executives, Mohit Bhandari and Ved Prakash Kalanoria, confirm a robust deal pipeline, highlighting India as one of Temasek’s best-performing markets. This expansion comes despite broader geopolitical uncertainties, including the West Asia war.

Key Investment Metrics Highlight Growth

Temasek’s local portfolio in India has quadrupled over the past decade, reaching $42 billion by March 2026. The firm deployed approximately $9 billion in India over the last three years, aiming to invest a similar $9 billion over the next three years. Additionally, AI-related exposure is targeted to increase to 15% of its portfolio value by 2031, up from the current 6%.

Refined Approach in Consumer Markets

Historically, Temasek has thrived by focusing on domestic consumption-driven sectors such as consumer, healthcare, and financial services, a strategy that effectively mitigated global macro-volatility. Within the consumer sector, the firm will now consider both staples-oriented regional brands and those catering to discretionary spending. This is exemplified by its recent acquisition of a 9-10% minority stake in Haldiram Snack Foods, valuing the company at $10 billion.

Diverse Portfolio and Upcoming Listings

Temasek’s current Indian portfolio spans both traditional and new-age enterprises, notably including ICICI Bank, Eternal, Lenskart, and Skyroot Aerospace. Looking ahead, two of its portfolio companies, NSE and Manipal Health Enterprises, are anticipated to have significant public listings this year.

Deepening AI Investments

The investor’s commitment to artificial intelligence is clear, with plans to significantly increase its AI-related exposure. Temasek will specifically target AI firms involved in both infrastructure and application layers. This strategy seeks partnerships with companies poised to benefit from the increasing adoption of AI across industries.

This broadened investment mandate signals Temasek’s long-term bullish outlook on India’s economic trajectory and technological advancement. The strategic shift positions the firm to capitalize on emerging industrial growth and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence within the Indian market.
