Tata Trusts has officially started the search for the next Tata Sons chairman, following N Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek reappointment beyond his current term ending in 2027.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has formally commenced the search for the next chairman of Tata Sons. This pivotal move follows N Chandrasekaran’s announcement that he will not pursue reappointment once his current term concludes on February 20, 2027.

Trustees convened on Thursday, passing a resolution to promptly establish a dedicated selection committee. This committee, operating under Tata Sons’ Articles of Association, is now tasked with recommending a suitable candidate for the top leadership position.

The Boardroom Impasse

Chandrasekaran, in an August 12 statement, reflected on his four decades with the Tata Group, highlighting his decade-long leadership of Tata Sons as a significant honor. He revealed that both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously recommended a five-year extension of his tenure.

This recommendation also received endorsement from the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. However, a board meeting on February 24, 2026, saw the proposal fail due to a lack of unanimous support from a single Board Member, leading Chandrasekaran to defer the decision.

He noted that six months had elapsed without a resolution to this impasse. Chandrasekaran emphasized the critical need for leadership clarity within Tata Sons, given its substantial strategic projects underway and its impact on employees, investors, partners, and other stakeholders.

Navigating the Transition

Chandrasekaran communicated his decision directly to the Tata Sons Board, urging them to accelerate the succession process to ensure a seamless transition. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust expressed its respect for his decision, acknowledging his profound contributions to Tata Sons and the broader Tata Group over the past decade.

The Trust has pledged its full support to Tata Sons in facilitating an orderly, timely, and smooth leadership change. This commitment aligns with the group’s core values and long-term strategic interests, marking a formal start to a crucial leadership succession.
