Tata Trusts File Legal Caveats Amid Governance Disputes

Seven Tata Trusts file legal caveats with the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner following internal governance complaints and leadership transitions.

Tata Trusts has filed caveats before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner to ensure the organization receives a formal hearing before any legal orders are issued. This precautionary legal measure follows a period of transition after the passing of Ratan Tata and the appointment of Noel Tata as the new chairman.

The Catalyst Behind the Legal Filings

The action comes in direct response to a complaint lodged by trustee Venu Srinivasan regarding governance lapses and board appointments at the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Former defence secretary Vijay Singh has also communicated concerns to the charity authority that align with Srinivasan’s submissions.

The seven trusts that filed caveats are listed below:

Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT)

Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT)

JRD Tata Trust

Tata Education Trust

Tata Social Welfare Trust

RD Tata Trust

Sarvajanik Seva Trust

Core Allegations and Leadership Roles

The complaints scrutinize specific administrative practices and the legitimacy of recent trustee appointments within the organization. Two distinct sets of caveats were filed under the names of Noel Tata and Neville Tata.

Noel Tata serves on the boards of all seven trusts, while Neville Tata serves as a trustee for four of them. Srinivasan’s allegations focus on trustee appointments, potential risks to tax-exempt status due to commercial involvement with Tata Sons, and independence regarding voting on the potential public listing of Tata Sons.
