Tata-Javelin Deal: India Boosts Defence Manufacturing & US Ties

Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has formally partnered with the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) to co-produce the advanced Javelin anti-tank missile system within India. This Memorandum of Understanding, announced on August 30, positions TASL as the key player for final assembly and integration of the Javelin All Up Round (AUR) domestically.

Strategic Production & Global Supply Chain

The deal is set to significantly enhance India-US defense cooperation, contributing to regional stability across the Indo-Pacific. This initiative involves establishing a dedicated final assembly and integration facility for the Javelin AUR, alongside developing component production capabilities within India.

This co-production model spans two continents, ensuring critical components continue to be manufactured in the United States to support domestic employment. The manufacturing breakdown is precise:

• Sub-assembly kits will originate from Lockheed Martin’s facility in Troy, Alabama.
• Guidance electronics units (GEUs) are to be produced at Raytheon’s facility in Tucson, Arizona.
• Final assembly and integration will then occur at TASL facilities in India, a move expected to expand the country’s high-tech manufacturing sector and defense workforce.

The Javelin Joint Venture, a collaboration between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, has a substantial production history, underscoring the system’s global presence and demand.

• Over 55,000 Javelin missiles have been produced to date.
• More than 12,000 reusable Command Launch Units (CLUs) have also been manufactured.
