N Chandrasekaran has driven Tata Group’s market cap to over ₹27 lakh crore, more than tripling its value since February 2017. Explore the growth trajectory.

N Chandrasekaran has successfully more than tripled the total market value of Tata Group companies, pushing its market capitalization past Rs 27 lakh crore during his leadership. This significant growth comes since he assumed control in February 2017, according to data from BSE and ETIG.

Chandrasekaran, scheduled to complete his second term as Tata Sons chief in February 2027, saw the group’s market cap rise from Rs 8.4 lakh crore. This performance marks a substantial increase over his tenure.

Group Market Cap Trajectories

  • Under Ratan Tata (1991-2012): Market cap grew from approximately Rs 8,000 crore to Rs 4.6 lakh crore, an almost 58-fold increase.
  • Under Cyrus Mistry (December 2012 – October 2016): Market cap nearly doubled from about Rs 4.6 lakh crore to Rs 8.5 lakh crore.
  • Under N Chandrasekaran (since February 2017): Market cap surged from Rs 8.4 lakh crore to over Rs 27 lakh crore, reflecting more than a threefold gain.

TCS, the software services major, has historically been the largest contributor to the overall group market cap since its listing in August 2004. Its proportional contribution, however, has varied across the tenures of the three chiefs.

TCS’s Role in Group Growth

  • Ratan Tata’s tenure: More than half of the group’s market value increase was attributed to TCS.
  • Cyrus Mistry’s leadership: TCS contributed about Rs 1.9 lakh crore, or 22%, to the group’s market cap rise.
  • Chandrasekaran’s tenure (since February 2017): TCS’s contribution to the group’s market cap jump was Rs 3.6 lakh crore, or approximately 13%.

On Wednesday, the group’s total market cap saw a decline of almost Rs 45,000 crore. This movement followed the public announcement of Chandrasekaran’s decision to conclude his tenure at Bombay House, as reported by BSE data.
