Supertails secures $30M to transform India’s pet care by focusing on infrastructure and comprehensive support for pet parents. Learn how they’re evolving the industry.

India’s pet care startup Supertails has secured $30 million in fresh funding, bringing its total capital to $57 million. This investment highlights the significant evolution occurring within India’s pet care industry, transitioning from a transactional category to one centered on emotion, trust, and comprehensive care.

Vineet Khanna, Co-founder of Supertails, discussed the company’s strategic decision to prioritize a more complex, care-focused approach early on. According to Khanna, building a care infrastructure is essential, as the pet industry cannot thrive on transactions alone.

The pet care landscape in India has shifted considerably in recent years. Initially sentiment-driven with limited scalability, the sector experienced a turning point during the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by increased pet adoptions and a new generation of pet owners. These individuals, now considering themselves “pet parents,” exhibit higher engagement, increased spending, and greater expectations for support.

Currently, approximately 85% of pet parents in India are first-time owners, indicating a substantial need for knowledge, guidance, and consistent care. Supertails aims to address this gap by expanding its services beyond mere commerce.

The company has developed a multi-layered system that offers convenience through rapid delivery of essential items like food and medicine. Additionally, Supertails is focusing on healthcare, an area where access to veterinarians remains limited. To improve healthcare accessibility, Supertails is establishing clinics, offering teleconsultation services, and building a network of trained veterinarians.

Parallel to these efforts, Supertails is developing a data layer that focuses on both the customer and the pet, understanding that different pets require different care journeys. This personalization allows the platform to anticipate needs and tailor recommendations.

Supertails strategically sequenced the development of these layers, starting with a marketplace, expanding into accessories, introducing teleconsultation to build its data capabilities, and then moving into medicine fulfillment and physical clinics. The company’s entry into quick commerce was driven by observed consumer behavior, addressing the immediate needs of pet parents.

This approach extends to the company’s growth strategy, which prioritizes customer retention over acquisition. Khanna emphasized the importance of ensuring every customer returns, highlighting that pet care inherently involves repeat purchases. However, maintaining loyalty requires a consistent and positive experience across all interactions.

Pet care carries significant emotional weight, where a single negative experience can quickly erode trust, while consistent positive experiences foster long-term loyalty. Supertails demonstrates this understanding by capturing pet names and birthdays and sending personalized gifts, designed to signal continuity and care rather than promote transactions.

With the new funding, Supertails plans to further expand its healthcare footprint, starting with a denser network of clinics in Bangalore. The company remains focused on enhancing access and consistency, reinforcing its commitment to integrating care into every aspect of its operations.

For Supertails, prioritizing care and trust is not just an added benefit but a fundamental element that drives growth and success in the pet care industry.
