Srinagar Airport Announces Major Runway Maintenance
Srinagar Airport is set to face significant operational disruptions from July 2026 due to extensive runway maintenance activities undertaken by the Indian Air Force. These planned closures will impact flight schedules over several months, necessitating adjustments for both airlines and passengers. The strategic airport, a vital link for the region, will undergo phased maintenance work to enhance its operational capabilities and ensure long-term operational safety and efficiency.
Phased Closures to Impact Air Traffic
The initial phase of maintenance will involve partial runway closures. From July 1 to September 30, 2026, the runway will be unavailable for operations every Monday and Tuesday. This scheduled unavailability during specific weekdays is expected to lead to flight cancellations and rescheduling, particularly affecting domestic and potentially international routes operating to and from Srinagar during this three-month period.
Following the partial closures, a complete shutdown of the runway is scheduled. The airport will experience a total runway closure from October 1 to October 16, 2026. This two-week period of full non-operation underscores the critical nature of the maintenance work, which is essential for comprehensive upgrades and safety enhancements at the facility.
Passenger Advisory and Operational Adjustments
Airport authorities have advised all travelers planning to fly during these periods to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates on flight statuses. Passengers are urged to verify their itineraries and be prepared for potential changes, including delays or cancellations, well in advance of their travel dates to mitigate inconvenience. This proactive communication is crucial for managing travel plans effectively amidst the operational changes.
Furthermore, the maintenance schedule has already necessitated operational adjustments for Hajj pilgrim return journeys. Due to payload limitations imposed by the ongoing or anticipated work, return flights for Hajj pilgrims are being rerouted via Ahmedabad. This measure ensures the safe and efficient transport of pilgrims while accommodating the temporary operational constraints at Srinagar Airport and minimizing disruption to the pilgrimage process.
