SportVot Disrupts Sports Broadcasting by Focusing on Grassroots Events
In a landscape where the price tags on sports media rights are reaching stratospheric levels, SportVot is carving out a significant niche by democratizing live sports streaming for grassroots, amateur, and semi-professional events. The startup, founded in 2019 by Sidhhant Agarwal, Shubhangi Gupta, and Yash Bhagwatkar, offers a white-label OTT solution designed to enable professional-grade broadcasting for events that have traditionally been underserved by expensive media rights deals. This strategy directly challenges the prevailing model where high costs often exclude smaller-scale sporting competitions.
The context for SportVot’s emergence is marked by a potential plateau in the valuation of major sports media rights. Reports suggest that the Indian Premier League’s media rights may not exceed the previous $5.4 Bn valuation in the upcoming cycle. Furthermore, the FIFA World Cup has faced difficulties securing a broadcast partner in India, even being compelled to re-evaluate its initial asking price of over $100 Mn. These trends highlight a growing tension between the exorbitant costs of elite sports broadcasting and the broader market’s capacity, creating an opening for innovative solutions like SportVot.
Innovating with a White-Label OTT Solution
SportVot’s core offering is a sophisticated yet accessible OTT platform that simplifies the process of capturing, producing, and streaming sports events. Co-founder Sidhhant Agarwal explained the company’s mission: “The biggest challenge for any sports organiser is to be able to capture video of your sports tournament. Earlier, broadcast or video production or streaming was very elite. The cost structure would never make it a viable option for any average tournament organiser to even think about. What we do is simplify video capture through automation and reduce its cost.”
The startup competes in India’s burgeoning sports tech market, projected to surpass $3.5 Bn by 2027, with players like CricHeroes, FanCode, and Stupa Sports Analytics. SportVot has successfully raised capital, including a recent ₹32.7 Cr round led by IAN Fund, bringing its total funding to approximately ₹40 Cr. Backers include prominent investors such as Anicut Capital, LVX (LetsVenture), Capital A, Omidyar Network, and Ankur Capital.
From Fantasy Gaming to Grassroots Streaming
Sidhhant Agarwal’s entrepreneurial journey began with a fantasy gaming platform focused on football, ThisGameWeek, which was later acquired by Nazara Technologies. After exiting in 2019, he founded SportVot with the initial aim of discovering sports talent. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented unexpected challenges, forcing the startup to pivot temporarily to streaming non-sporting events like religious gatherings and political rallies. This period, however, proved instrumental in refining their technology and understanding the nuances of the streaming space.
Selected for a sports tech accelerator program in Melbourne by Startupbootcamp, SportVot gained valuable insights and support. The company officially returned to its live sports thesis in early 2022, confident in the mass adoption potential of its simplified broadcasting solution. The pandemic-induced pause and subsequent pivot allowed SportVot to develop a robust and adaptable product, better equipped to serve the needs of grassroots sports organizers.
SportVot’s Scalable Streaming Playbook
SportVot’s business model is designed for flexibility and scalability, catering to a range of customer needs and budgets. The company offers a full-service provision, including camera installation and configuration, or supports customers using their own smartphone cameras. For enhanced production quality at a lower cost, SportVot provides automated cameras that track on-field action. More demanding clients can opt for remote direction and production services, all powered by SportVot’s cloud infrastructure.
The platform’s offerings extend to graphics for scoreboards and player identification, remote commentary services, and automated highlight clip generation for social media. Monetization options are also available, including advertisement and sponsor cue integration. Pricing operates on a rental model, encompassing camera and equipment rental, streaming production, and software, with costs determined by feature sets. While long-term subscriptions are an option, most clients prefer per-game or per-competition payments.
Expanding Reach and Overcoming Infrastructure Hurdles
SportVot’s client base includes notable organizations such as Reliance Foundation Youth Sports and South Africa’s SuperSport Schools, alongside numerous amateur and school-level tournament organizers. Key international markets include South Africa, Portugal, Israel, and the US, often reached through partnerships with hardware manufacturers like Pixellot. The company has enabled live streaming for over 35 sports, with kabaddi, football, and cricket being popular in India, while rugby and football lead internationally. Padel and pickleball have also seen a surge in demand.
In the last fiscal year, SportVot streamed approximately 100,000 matches, generating around ₹19 Cr in revenue for FY26, with ambitions to at least double this figure in FY27. However, the primary challenge remains the inconsistent quality of sports infrastructure, particularly in India. Agarwal highlighted that venue infrastructure issues occur 5-7% of the time, impacting deployment even when SportVot’s systems are correctly implemented. This reliance on baseline venue quality is a critical factor for the company’s profitability, which it has yet to achieve.
The Future of Sports Streaming: Grassroots Focus
Despite infrastructure challenges, SportVot’s innovative approach and adaptability have allowed it to identify workarounds. Agarwal cited examples of tournament organizers creating makeshift tripods from bamboo and using 5G dongles to overcome connectivity issues in remote areas. These instances underscore the ingenuity present at the grassroots level, even when faced with significant infrastructural limitations.
SportVot is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on the future of sports streaming, which it believes lies in the grassroots rather than solely at the elite level. The company’s growth trajectory in India is intrinsically linked to the development of a comprehensive ecosystem that strengthens sports infrastructure from the ground up. By bridging the gap between advanced technology and the realities of grassroots sports, SportVot aims to redefine sports broadcasting accessibility and foster wider participation.
